Formed by towers of different heights, named East and West, the multifunctional complex "Federation" was built on the 13th section of "Moscow-City", with a total area of 10,730 sq. m. Today, the complex has been assigned the address Presnenskaya Embankment, 12.
Today, its skyscraper "Vostok" is the tallest building in Moscow and is only slightly inferior to the St. Petersburg "Lakhta Center". The MFC "Federation" is an elite real estate object, which houses premium offices, apartments and shopping galleries.
History of the construction of the Federation Tower
A huge team of specialists worked on the creation of the Federation MFC. The architectural design of the Federation MFC was developed by Sergey Tchoban and Peter Schweger from the SPEECH architectural bureau. The chief designer of the complex was the American company Thornton Tomasetti.
The developer of the project is AEON Corporation. Construction work was carried out under the supervision of Mirax Group (then Potok), which was later renamed Federation Tower CJSC. The Chinese corporation CSCEC, YUANDA and the general contractor Renaissance Construction from 2006 to 2017 also took part in the process.
Initially, the project involved the construction of a 400-meter spire, which promised to be the highest element of the complex. It was supposed to house 2 panoramic high-speed elevators and an observation deck. Until 2012, construction was in full swing, as a result of which the spire was half-completed. But in 2014, it was decided to abandon the idea of its construction. It took the developer 3 years to dismantle the spire.
The creation of the monolithic frame of the Vostok Tower building was completed on December 9, 2014. By the end of 2015, the engineering work was completed and the façades were glazed. However, the building was only put into operation on November 15, 2017.
The quality of construction work was under strict control of Mosgosstroynadzor, a host of various research institutes and Turner Construction Company. The total investment in the project was about $1.2 billion.
Today, the management and operation of the complex is under the control of the companies VB Service LLC and Federation Group Management Company.
Construction Features
The Federation MFC is two skyscrapers of different heights, rising from a common stylobate part. Their construction was carried out in accordance with the strictest existing standards in the world and using all possible energy-efficient technologies.
The foundation used in the construction of the Federation was a massive concrete slab, for the creation of which 14,000 m3 of concrete were used, which was duly recorded in the Guinness Book of Records.
On this powerful base, 2 triangular skyscrapers were erected on a common stylobate. Their high stability was achieved by forming a concrete core and 25 columns, evenly spaced along the perimeter and passing through the towers along the entire height. These are massive rectangular structures, the length of which is 2 m, and the width is 1.4 m.
The East Tower has 96 floors and is 373.7 m high. The West Tower has 63 floors and is 242.3 m high. The stylobate part is a 6-story atrium. The entire complex is serviced by 67 Twin system elevators, which means the simultaneous operation of two cabins in one shaft. Thanks to this solution, their throughput capacity can be increased almost twofold.
On every 25th to 30th floor there are outriggers made of high-strength steel, which are called outrigger floors. These floors provide additional stability to the skyscrapers.
The latest glazing systems, which at that time were not found anywhere in the world, were used for glazing the facades of the Federation MFC. The work was carried out using mirror argon glass, specially produced for this project by Chinese and German specialists. Their uniqueness lies in maintaining the optimal air temperature in the building, and the heat-reflecting ability can be equated to the indicators of a brick wall, which completely eliminates the possibility of breakage and tragic outcomes.
The facade pattern is formed by a vertical grid made of thin stone profiles. As the building increases in height, their width decreases, which creates the effect of skyscrapers endlessly striving upwards.
In the Federation MFC, a hidden facade maintenance system has been installed, allowing for quick maintenance while remaining completely unnoticed by residents and office workers.
Federation Tower today
The total area of the complex is 442,915.2 sq. m. Starting from the 69th floor of the "East" and the 62nd floor of the "West", it houses 191 platinum apartments of varying sizes from small studios of 46 sq. m. to huge penthouses of 1,400 sq. m.
Natural stone, valuable wood species and decorative plaster were used for interior decoration. They have built-in kitchens with premium-class appliances, as well as fully finished bathrooms with luxury-class plumbing. Residents of the complex have a 24-hour concierge service, and there is also a hotel in the complex.

Interesting facts and features
In 2009, the West Tower won the FIABCI Prix d'Exellence competition in the Office Real Estate category.
Until 2010, the West Tower was considered the building with the tallest electronic clock in the world, which was noted in the Guinness Book of Records. It also included a record of the largest volume of concrete used to pour the foundation of the Federation MFC.
The complex received the Real Estate Market Records award in the Business Center No. 1 category in 2011, and on April 2, 2012, a fire broke out in the Vostok tower. 25 fire and rescue units and 4 helicopters were called in to extinguish it. But despite all efforts, the fire on the top floor of the building could not be extinguished for a long time. Nevertheless, there were no casualties as a result of the incident, and Vostok did not suffer significant damage.
On November 25, 2014, the Vostok Tower of the Federation IFC became the tallest building in Russia and Europe. It was on this day that its height exceeded 351 m. After the frame was completed in 2014, CTBUH recognized it as the tallest skyscraper in Europe. Federation held this title for 3 years and gave it to the Lakhta Center, built in 2017 in St. Petersburg, whose height was 462 m. Since then, the Vostok of the Federation IFC is considered the second tallest building in Europe, but the tallest residential skyscraper.
Nevertheless, in the same year, the Federation MFC earned the title of the best multifunctional complex according to the European Property Awards, and 2 years later – the grand prix of the International Property Awards “World's Best Property”.
The complex has been used as a filming location on numerous occasions. Not only have various TV shows and commercials been filmed here, but a documentary about the Federation MFC itself was also created by the Discovery Channel.
