Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has ordered the phased implementation of a public transport fare collection system based on biometric passenger identification.
In the initial phase, innovative payments were introduced in the metro. By the end of spring 2022, Face Pay is expected to be tested on buses and trolleybuses. Deputy Mayor for Transport Maksym Liksutov shared the results of the experiment.
From the beginning of April until the 21st of the month, Face Pay usage statistics showed the greatest demand for the innovative system at Delovoy Tsentr (Solntsevskaya and Bolshaya Koltsevaya lines), Vystavochnaya, and Mezhdunarodnaya (Filyovskaya line) stations.
The active use of contactless payments in Moscow City is likely due to the digital sophistication of employees of commercial organizations located in the skyscrapers of the capital's business center.
The fare for Face Pay payments is the same as for payments with a Troika card, but the lack of need to manipulate the card increases the convenience of consumption and saves time when going through the terminal.
As explained on the Department of Transport's Telegram channel, Face Pay is a domestic development fully compliant with digital import substitution. The payment system's data centers are located within the Russian Federation.
