Atomic Wallet

Atomic Wallet is a multi-currency, non-custodial crypto wallet for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. It combines the ability to receive and send digital assets, built-in exchanges, and staking for specific coins. Private keys and the seed phrase are under the user’s control, so funds are not held in a standard Atomic Wallet exchange account.

The wallet is suitable for managing assets across multiple blockchains, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, TRON, and other supported networks. For each token, not only the currency name matters, but also the network on which it is issued. For example, USDT on Ethereum and USDT TRC-20 on TRON require different network mechanisms and fees. Before transferring, you must select the correct asset and verify that the address matches the sender’s network.

Atomic Wallet Features

Within the app, you can create addresses to receive cryptocurrency, send coins, track your transaction history, and exchange some of your assets through partner services. Some coins are available for staking; the specific list and terms depend on the blockchain. This is not a bank deposit: the reward rate varies, and withdrawing from staking can sometimes take several days or weeks.

Key features:

  • Receiving and sending BTC, ETH, TRX, and other supported assets;
  • managing multiple cryptocurrencies in a single mobile or desktop app;
  • built-in exchange between available currency pairs;
  • staking supported PoS coins;
  • viewing your recovery phrase and private keys;
  • customizing transaction fees for individual blockchains, including Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Unlike an exchange, Atomic Wallet is not a centralized operator that can restore a balance at a customer’s request. If a recovery phrase is lost or compromised, a standard support request will not restore control over the address.

Cryptocurrency Exchange and Fees

The app is free to install, and there are no separate fees for storing cryptocurrency. When sending funds, you pay the transaction fee of the network on which the transaction takes place. Sending ERC-20 tokens requires ETH, while TRC-20 tokens may require TRX or TRON network resources. Bitcoin fees are determined by network congestion and the transaction size in bytes.

The built-in exchange works differently than a regular transfer. Coins are sent to the partner’s address, and after the exchange is completed, a different asset is credited to your wallet. Atomic Wallet charges 0.5% for the exchange, plus the partner’s fee. Additional network fees and exchange rate differences are factored into the calculated amount received. The exchange rate is not fixed for the entire duration of the order execution: due to market fluctuations, the final amount may differ from the preliminary estimate.

For frequent exchanges, these costs are significant. Before confirming a transaction, it’s important to compare the expected number of coins received, the total fee, and network limitations. Small transactions may not be cost-effective due to fixed network fees and the partner’s minimum transaction amounts.

Staking: Returns and Limitations

Atomic Wallet supports staking for a number of cryptocurrencies, including SOL, ATOM, TRX, and other available assets. Conditions vary: on some networks, rewards are paid out regularly, while on others, a lock-up period is required before they can be claimed. When exiting staking, a lock-up period may apply. For example, ATOM has a lock-up period of approximately 21 days. While coins are delegated, they may not be available for immediate transfer.

The rate of return should not be viewed as a guaranteed annual payout. The final amount is influenced by the validator, fees, changes to network rules, and the coin’s price. Staking operations also require a small available balance to cover network fees.

Security and the 2023 Incident

When you set up Atomic Wallet, a 12-word recovery phrase is generated. It allows you to regain access on another device if the original setup is lost. The app password protects the local interface but does not replace the recovery phrase. You must not photograph it, send it via messaging apps, store it alongside passwords, or enter it on websites under the guise of a technical verification.

On June 3, 2023, Atomic Wallet users reported unauthorized transactions. The company acknowledged the incident, temporarily restricted the app’s distribution, and conducted an investigation. This case is important for assessing risks: the non-custodial model does not, in and of itself, rule out vulnerabilities in the app, the device, or the recovery process. When storing a significant amount, it makes sense to consider separate hardware protection and to separate your main reserve from funds used for everyday transfers.

Availability in Russia and Withdrawals to a Card

Creating a software wallet does not require bank identification. However, buying, selling, and withdrawing cryptocurrency for fiat depend on third-party operators, their KYC policies, and the geographic coverage of their services. The presence of an exchange button within Atomic Wallet does not mean that a user can receive rubles on a Russian card. Direct blockchain transfers are available provided there are compatible networks and sufficient funds to cover transaction fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to use Atomic Wallet?

Installation and storage are free. A blockchain fee is charged for sending cryptocurrency, and when using the built-in exchange, an additional 0.5% fee and a partner commission are deducted.

Does Atomic Wallet support TRC-20 USDT?

The wallet works with TRON and tokens on that network. When receiving USDT, you need to select the appropriate network separately and verify that the specific asset is supported in the current version of the app.

Can I recover my wallet if I lose my phone?

Yes, provided you have saved your 12-word recovery phrase. The password on your old device does not replace the recovery phrase, and support cannot recover lost keys.

Has Atomic Wallet ever had a security incident?

Yes. In June 2023, the company reported unauthorized user transactions and an ongoing investigation. This fact should be taken into account when choosing a wallet for storing large amounts.

Editor’s Opinion

Atomic Wallet is convenient for users who need a single interface for multiple blockchains, basic transfers, and staking. The availability of desktop and mobile apps simplifies portfolio management, and the built-in exchange eliminates some manual operations. However, this convenience comes at the cost of partner fees and potential discrepancies between the actual exchange rate and the preliminary estimate. The main concern here relates to security: the 2023 incident prevents us from describing the product as an unconditionally reliable place to store all savings. For moderate transaction amounts, the wallet is functional, but for the long-term storage of significant capital, it is wise to use separate addresses and hardware security. Like any non-custodial product, Atomic Wallet requires discipline when storing the recovery phrase and selecting the token network.
