Electrum

Electrum is a non-custodial Bitcoin wallet that has been in development since 2011. It is a specialized program for storing BTC, creating and receiving addresses, sending transactions, and managing network fees. Electrum runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. Unlike multi-currency wallets, it does not have a unified interface for Ethereum, TON, USDT, or dozens of other tokens.

Bitcoin Without a Third-Party Custodian

When creating a standard wallet, Electrum generates a seed phrase, and the private keys remain under the owner’s control. The program connects to the Electrum server network and uses SPV verification of blockchain data. Therefore, you don’t need to download the entire Bitcoin blockchain or run your own full node to use it. This approach reduces system requirements but involves interacting with server infrastructure that can see the wallet’s requests.

Electrum is suitable for more than just simple transfers. Within the program, you can create addresses to receive BTC, view incoming and outgoing transactions, sign transactions, and manage the parameters for sending them. For experienced users, the program offers watch-only wallets, multi-signature, and cold storage solutions.

Key features:

  • storing and sending native Bitcoin, including support for SegWit addresses;
  • customizable transaction fees based on network congestion and transaction size;
  • watch-only access to monitor addresses without storing private keys;
  • multisignature with multiple participants who approve BTC spending;
  • integration with compatible hardware wallets, including Ledger and Trezor.

Tools for working with the Lightning Network are also available for managing funds, but this payment channel should not be confused with a standard on-chain BTC transfer. Lightning has its own liquidity and recovery mechanisms. When using these features, you need to understand how the channels work and the backup procedure separately.

Bitcoin Fees and Confirmations

Electrum is distributed free of charge and does not charge a separate fee for standard BTC storage. When sending a blockchain transaction, a Bitcoin network fee is incurred. Its amount depends primarily on the transaction size in virtual bytes and the current demand for space in blocks, rather than simply on the transfer amount in rubles or dollars. If BTC is collected from a large number of small UTXO inputs, the transaction may take up more space and cost more.

The wallet allows you to select the fee amount before sending. Setting the fee too low may result in a long wait for confirmation. After sending, you can track the transaction status in Electrum and a blockchain explorer. A confirmed transfer cannot be canceled through technical support or reversed like a card payment.

Cold Storage and Multisignature

One practical use case for Electrum is separating balance viewing from the ability to sign transactions. A “watch-only” wallet on a connected computer displays incoming transactions and helps prepare transactions, while private keys remain on a separate offline device. The signed transaction is then transferred to a computer with network access to be published on the blockchain.

Multisignature is used when a single private key is not sufficient to spend funds. For example, different participants may hold different keys, and a transaction is confirmed by a predefined number of signatures. This helps facilitate joint management of BTC but complicates recovery: you must save the wallet configuration and the data of all required participants.

Seed Phrase and Recovery

Electrum uses its own seed phrase format, which does not automatically conform to the BIP39 standard. Therefore, you cannot expect to be able to import any Electrum seed phrase into just any mobile crypto wallet without additional configuration. When restoring, you must select the correct wallet type and the appropriate import method.

A password encrypts the local wallet, but if the seed phrase is saved, you can restore access and set a new password. If both the password and the seed phrase are lost, it is usually impossible to recover your BTC. You must never store your seed phrase in screenshots, send it in chat rooms, or enter it on websites posing as customer support.

Electrum in Russia and Buying Cryptocurrency

Electrum is not tied to any Russian bank and does not offer a built-in, guaranteed withdrawal of rubles to a card. Its purpose is to manage Bitcoin addresses and conduct network transactions. To exchange BTC for fiat currency, you’ll need a separate exchange, an exchange service, or another available provider with its own rules and customer requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Electrum support USDT and Ethereum?

No. The standard version of Electrum is designed for Bitcoin. USDT on the TRON, Ethereum, and other blockchain networks is not compatible with this wallet.

Do I need a passport to set up Electrum?

KYC is not required to install the program and create your own Bitcoin address. Identification may be required when buying or selling BTC through external financial services.

Can I use Electrum with a hardware wallet?

Yes. Compatible Ledger and Trezor devices, as well as other hardware models, are supported. Signing on the device means you don’t have to enter your private keys into the software.

How do I recover my BTC if I lose my computer?

Create a wallet on a new device and restore it from your saved Electrum seed phrase, selecting the correct wallet type. Without the seed phrase and other necessary data, you may lose access to your funds.

Editor’s Opinion

Electrum is suitable for Bitcoin owners who need control over their keys, transaction fees, and the transaction signing scheme, rather than a store of built-in tokens. For long-term BTC storage, the watch-only mode, multi-signature, and hardware wallet support are particularly useful. To a novice user, the interface may seem more complex than that of universal mobile wallets; however, this complexity stems from the actual tools for managing Bitcoin. The main drawback is the lack of multi-currency support and direct bank withdrawals. If you need USDT or TON, you shouldn’t choose Electrum just because of its well-known name. For BTC, it’s a functional software wallet, provided that the user knows how to safeguard their seed phrase and carefully verifies the transaction parameters.
