MetaMask

MetaMask is a non-custodial crypto wallet for interacting with Web3, tokens, decentralized exchanges, and multiple blockchains. It is available as a browser extension and as an app for iOS and Android. The wallet allows users to manage assets, connect to dApps, confirm transactions, and exchange cryptocurrencies without storing funds in a centralized exchange account.

MetaMask has long been used for Ethereum and EVM-compatible networks, but its capabilities are no longer limited to this area. The wallet now natively supports Bitcoin, Solana, and TRON, so you can hold BTC, SOL, and TRX in the same interface alongside ETH and tokens from popular EVM networks. Different networks have their own addresses, fees, and transaction signing rules.

Cryptocurrencies and Supported Networks

MetaMask supports ETH, ERC-20 tokens, NFTs, and assets on compatible blockchains, including Base, Arbitrum, BNB Smart Chain, and Polygon. Bitcoin support allows you to receive and send native BTC, while integration with Solana and TRON expands the wallet’s capabilities for SOL and USDT. To receive a specific token, you need to select its network rather than relying solely on the ticker in the interface.

  • ETH and Ethereum tokens, including USDT and USDC.
  • Assets on EVM networks that support smart contracts.
  • Bitcoin with a separate BTC address.
  • SOL and Solana tokens.
  • TRX and compatible TRON network tokens, including USDT.

Creating a Wallet and Recovery

MetaMask supports creating a wallet with a secret recovery phrase, as well as setting up login via Google, Apple, or Telegram. These are different models of backup access. With the classic option, the owner independently stores the secret recovery phrase. With social login, a linked account and password are used, while cryptographic mechanisms ensure independent control over assets. Losing the necessary data for the selected recovery method can result in loss of access.

The app password protects local login but does not replace the backup in the classic scheme. You must not disclose your Secret Recovery Phrase to support, enter it into search forms, send it via chat, or store it in plain text in the cloud. MetaMask does not cancel confirmed transactions or refund funds after an erroneous transfer.

Exchanges, Transfers, and Fees

Receiving cryptocurrency at your own address does not require a subscription fee. The blockchain charges a network fee for sending assets: on Ethereum, this is typically paid in ETH; on Solana, in SOL; and TRON has its own resources and fees. When working with smart contracts, the cost may differ from that of a simple transfer. MetaMask displays the preliminary transaction details before confirmation.

In MetaMask Swaps, the standard service fee is 0.875% for the corresponding swaps. Network fees and the exchange rate are also taken into account. This is not a custody fee, nor is it a universal rate for all third-party DEXs: on external platforms, the terms are determined by their respective protocols. For complex transactions, it’s helpful to consider the impact of slippage, token approvals, and withdrawal permissions.

Security and Hardware Wallets

Connecting to Web3 sites is one of MetaMask’s primary functions, but this is precisely where the main risks arise. Phishing sites mimic well-known applications and request dangerous permissions. Before signing a transaction or approving a token, you must verify that the website address and the content of the request are correct. Simply connecting to a dApp does not automatically grant permission to spend funds; however, a confirmed approval of a smart contract can grant access to your assets.

For added protection, MetaMask supports integration with hardware wallets, including Ledger, on compatible platforms. In this setup, the MetaMask interface is used to interact with applications, while critical signatures are confirmed by the hardware device. Having a hardware device does not correct errors in the selected smart contract, so verifying the transaction text remains mandatory.

Operating in Russia and Banking Transactions

You can create a non-custodial wallet without registering with fiat payment services. Built-in features for buying, selling, and withdrawing to a card depend on the specific payment service provider and the country of service. A Russian bank card does not automatically become an available withdrawal method simply because MetaMask has a “Sell” feature. For transactions involving rubles, a supported payment route is required, taking into account applicable restrictions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does MetaMask support Bitcoin and USDT TRC-20?

Yes. MetaMask supports native Bitcoin and the TRON network, including compatible tokens. When transferring funds, you must use the address and network of the selected asset.

Is it mandatory to write down the seed phrase?

When creating a wallet the traditional way, you must save your Secret Recovery Phrase. When setting up social login, a different recovery system is used via your linked account and password.

How much does it cost to swap within MetaMask?

MetaMask Swaps charges a 0.875% fee, plus network fees and the terms of the specific swap route.

Can I connect a Ledger?

Yes. Integration with hardware wallets is supported on compatible devices and MetaMask versions.

Editor's Opinion

MetaMask is convenient for those who work with smart contracts, DeFi, and multiple networks from a single browser. Support for Bitcoin, Solana, and TRON has significantly expanded its use beyond Ethereum. Another advantage is the ability to connect a hardware wallet and avoid storing keys for large amounts in a browser you use regularly. However, its rich feature set doesn’t make the product easy for beginners: you need to understand the difference between network fees, exchange fees, and token spending permissions. For basic BTC storage without Web3, there are simpler solutions. MetaMask is best chosen primarily for connecting to decentralized applications and managing your own keys, rather than for withdrawing funds to a bank card.
