The supermarket on the second floor of Afimall City has been closed since July 12. It’s coming back with a new look: X5 is creating a gourmet space inside in partnership with the Hurma Group restaurant chain.
For those who work in the office towers, these past two months have been noticeable. The nearest large grocery store dropped off the “leave the office—stop by for dinner” route, and the entire flow of customers shifted between cafes and the food court. Now, the “Perekrestok” at Afimoll is being prepared for a relaunch.
What’s Inside
The concept consists of three parts. The first is an open kitchen: they plan to serve breakfast there, host master classes and tastings, and operate a wine bar. The second is a hot food area: pizza, burgers, sushi, and draft beer. The third consists of themed zones with menus that change seasonally.
“This will be something truly new in terms of how food can be presented in a supermarket,” says Dmitry Levitsky, founder of Hurma Group. Indirect confirmation of the project’s seriousness: the group is looking to hire a food court director, chefs, bartenders, and servers for the venue. For the store, this is a restaurant-style staff, not a typical retail one.
When is the opening: September 18 or October after all?
There’s no single version—and that’s perhaps the main mystery. According to the retailer, the launch is scheduled for September 18. A representative of the shopping center, in a comment to the industry press, cites a different date: October.
We checked Afimoll’s official channels on September 15. The store’s page on the shopping center’s website still displays a single line: “The ‘Perekrestok’ supermarket is currently under renovation.” No date is given. The operating hours listed remain the same—daily from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. There is also no announcement from X5 describing the concept, either on the chain’s website or in its press releases.
So, three days before the announced opening, neither party has publicly confirmed the date. Furthermore, the store’s floor area isn’t disclosed anywhere: whether it’s changing or if it’s just a matter of reconfiguring the sales floor—nothing official has been said.
It’s clear even without a press release why Afimoll needs this. A supermarket with a chef and a wine bar ceases to be a place where people pop in for milk and begins to compete with Moscow City restaurants and cafes for evening foot traffic. Evening revenue is a whole other story: a wine bar in a supermarket operates on a different logic than a deli counter.
Keep an eye on the date. All updates on the property can be found in the Afimoll City news; the full catalog includes Afimoll stores by category and food items.
